Auxiliary contacts, also called auxiliary contactors, refer to secondary electromechanical devices which are designed to complement primary switching devices like contactors, switches, relays, and circuit breakers. They remain connected to the main switching equipment and operate at the same time as the primary equipment.
Auxiliary contacts come in a wide range of terminal configurations and mounting styles, made suitable for a multitude of industrial control applications. The variety of terminal types includes screw lamp terminals, screw terminals, and cage clamp terminals. Where mounting styles are concerned, auxiliary contacts are commonly available as DIN rail mounts and front mounts.
The working principle of auxiliary contacts is simple. They remain physically affixed to the primary contacts, simultaneously changing state along with the main contacts. Auxiliary contacts are responsible for passing data from the electrical circuit to the logic controllers, which subsequently deliver information to the linked devices.
Auxiliary contacts are extensively used in industrial control applications. Most commonly, they are used in push-button controllers, operating as a start button. Other widely used applications include:
