What are generators?

Generators are electrical devices specifically designed as temporary electric power sources. They provide temporary electrical power to both small-scale and large-scale appliances and equipment when necessary. Portable generators are usually backed by petrol or diesel engines. They convert the mechanical energy produced by these engines and generate electricity.

Portable generators are extensively used across industrial, commercial, construction, domestic and community spaces. They are ideal solutions for emergency power supplies during power outages and also provide additional electrical power required for running heavier equipment. 

Types of generators

Portable generators can be broadly classified into three types. These are: 

• Petrol generators: As the name suggests, petrol generators use petrol as fuel to generate electric energy. 
• Diesel generators: Almost similar to petrol generators, the only difference between them and diesel generators is that the latter use diesel instead of petrol to generate electric energy. Otherwise, both engines are the same.
• Inverter generators: As evident from the name, these types of generators are very different from the other two types. Inverter generators are designed for applications particular to sensitive digital devices (like laptops, computers, mobile phones, etc.) as well as for battery charging. They usually offer a more stable and fuel-efficient alternative power source.

How do generators work?

The working principle of generators is simple. Portable generators possess a combustion engine and an alternator. The fuel powers the engine and the alternator generates electricity by transforming the mechanical energy produced by the engine into electrical energy. The generated electricity is then delivered through power outlets.
