What are hydraulic filters?

Hydraulic filters are a part of hydraulic systems and are specifically designed to filter hydraulic liquids from contaminants. They ensure proper filtration of hydraulic liquids like oils and water, keeping the hydraulic system clean from potential contaminants from low-quality liquid, ingress from seals, and wear and tear of components. 

Types of hydraulic filters

Hydraulic filters can be categorised into different types, the most common of which include: 

• Return filters: These types of hydraulic filters remove contaminants from the hydraulic fluid downstream, thereby ensuring that the fluid is cleared of any impurities before returning back to the tanks. 
• In-line hydraulic filters: These types of hydraulic filters are used directly on the line, typically removing contaminants from an individual or a set of components. 
• Suction filters: These types of hydraulic filters are used to protect the pumps from potential contamination. 

Importance of hydraulic filters 

Hydraulic systems operate with high pressure and faster cycle times, simultaneously increasing the risk of contamination in the system. Hydraulic fluid contamination can lead to system failure. But with hydraulic filters, this risk is considerably minimised as they prevent:

• Mixing of incompatible fluids
• Acid corrosion and fluid breakdown 
• Internal leakage and component inaccuracy
• Sludge due to particle buildup
