An operator interface, or O/I, refers to a specific type of interface device that allows the operator to transmit orders to the controller section of a process and to receive information about the process's present state from the controller.
An operator interface can be simple or complicated. For instance, a simple operator interface has different buttons and switches that remain connected to the input, and different pilot lights and indicators that remain connected to the output. In this type of simple operator interface, the operator sends orders to the controller via the inputs and receives information on the state from the controller via the outputs. More complicated operator interfaces usually possess alphanumeric displays, keyboards, screens, and even integrated software.
Industrial operator interfaces come in a wide range of varieties. These include ones with simple keyboards and text displays as well as ones with complicated graphical interfaces.
