What are serial cable assemblies?

Serial cable assemblies, or simply serial cables, are types of computer cables primarily used to transmit data and information between multiple computer systems. The cables are equipped with serial communication protocols. Most of the serial cable assemblies feature RS-232 interface specifications to transfer data. These RS-232 serial cables are typically shielded and require D-subminiature connectors to terminate the cables. 

Types of serial cable assemblies

Serial cable assemblies are of different types. These include: 

• DTE-DCE cables: These are basic types of serial cable assemblies which possess universal compatibility and are widely used across data communication applications. 
• Null modem cables: These types of serial cable assemblies are used to ensure that the connection between two PCs remains stable even without any modem. 
• V.35 crossover cables: These types of serial cables are used for applications that specifically require enhanced data rates.
• Serial printer cables: As the name suggests, these types of serial cables are designed to establish a stable connection between computers and printers. 

Applications

Serial cable assemblies have been replaced by more common types of connection cables like USB, wireless and Ethernet. However, they are still used in some specific applications. These include connections between computers and printers, input and output devices, PLCs, and HMIs. Today, serial cable assemblies are most commonly used in scientific instruments, industrial automation systems, consumer electronics, industrial circuit boards, and point-of-sale technologies.
